Frequently asked questions

What is hearing care professional?

A hearing care professional is a healthcare professional who is focused on the diagnosis, treatment, and management of hearing loss. There are two primary types of hearing professionals.

Audiologists: These professionals specialize in diagnosing, treating, and managing disorders related to hearing and balance. They often work in healthcare settings such as hospitals, clinics, or private practices. Audiologists conduct hearing tests, provide rehabilitation services, and may recommend hearing aids or other assistive devices.

Hearing Instrument Specialists (HIS): Also known as hearing aid specialists, these professionals specialize in fitting and dispensing hearing aids and other hearing assistive devices. They work closely with individuals who have hearing loss to find the most appropriate devices for their needs and provide ongoing support and adjustments as necessary. They typically work in settings such as hearing aid clinics or retail stores specializing in hearing healthcare products.

How do I know if I need to see a hearing care professional?

You may benefit from seeing a hearing care professional if you experience symptoms of hearing loss, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), difficulty understanding speech, or if you have concerns about your hearing health.

What happens during a hearing evaluation?

A hearing evaluation typically includes a series of tests to assess hearing sensitivity, speech understanding, and middle ear function. These tests may include pure-tone audiometry, speech audiometry, and tympanometry.

How often should I have my hearing checked?

It is recommended to have your hearing checked periodically, especially if you notice changes in your hearing or if you have risk factors for hearing loss (such as exposure to loud noise, aging, or certain medical conditions). Your hearing specialist can recommend an appropriate schedule for follow-up evaluations based on your individual needs.
